Knit Ampersand Wall Decoration
I love being able to combine knitting, embroidery, and crochet with other mediums. It is probably my favorite way to experiment with fiber crafts. Paper embroidery, Kool-Aid dyed wool, crocheting on paper, and now knitting on wire. I can't stop! Haha. What's the point if you can't have fun with crafts, right? I also love being able to make inexpensive and handmade decoration pieces for my space. This knit ampersand is my new favorite wall decoration. It looks so cute hanging next to my art prints. The ampersand was super easy to make too! The possibilities of knitting on this bendable wire are endless...
Materials:
- Size 5 double pointed needles (dpns)
- Worsted weight yarn
- Cerrowire primary wire, 17 ft.
- Wire cutters
- Scissors
- Tapestry Needle
Step 1: Cast on 4 stitches
Step 2: Take the wire and hold it behind the 4 stitches on the needle. Take the working yarn and bring it behind the wire and knit the 4 stitches.
Step 3: Slide the stitches to the other end of the needle. Bring the working yarn behind the wire again and knit across.
Step 4: Repeat Step 3, making sure you bring the yarn behind the wire on each new row, until you reach your desired length.
Step 5: Twist the wire into the shape of an ampersand "&", word, letter, shape, whatever you want! Tightly wrap a length of yarn around the parts of the shape/letter that overlap.
Step 6: Continue tightly wrapping around the overlapping sections until the shape/letter is secure. Weave in the ends with a tapestry needle and cut the excess yarn.
That's it! Hang your ampersand on the wall next to your favorite prints. I love looking at my little knit wall decoration hanging above my desk. Just a little something handmade and cheerful to add to my space! I hope you give it a try and make one too!
I definitely want to make other wall art words using this technique. I'm thinking about knitting the word "sleep" to hang above my bed. I definitely need the reminder to catch more zzzz....haha.
What are you going to try with this technique? Your name? A new baby's name? Oh, and hang it above their crib! So cute. See, the possibilities are endless. :)
